Rita just had to see what she would look like with straight hair, so before having her hair cornrowed, the beautician hot ironed her hair. She loved it!! But, that is obviously too hard on the hair to do all the time. She may have her hair chemically relaxed in a couple of years. Right now, she is learning to do her hair the natural way: lots of oil, lots of care, silk do rag, etc. Oh yes, she is now 11 years old, received all A's in her first year of middle school, loves soccer (still), and is in the 6th grade.

Rita and Roger
These pictures were taken in May 2000. Rita, 5, is on the left, and Roger, 4 is on the right. It was really hard to choose which pictures to use, because they are so photogenic that all the pictures were great.

These are two of our "Little Ones." Rita is 5 years old, and Roger is 4 years old. That's right, they are 11 months apart in age!! Their adoptions are finalized.

Roger is just a few weeks old in this picture. How could anyone turn their back on such a cutie!! When he was just a couple of weeks old, the state placed Roger with us as a foster child. We gladly took him two hours away, once a week, for visitation for an hour with the birth mom. She and Roger has supervised visitation at the state office. The birthmom was in a drug treatment program, and seemed to be doing great. But...the drug treatment program felt it would be best if Roger were in a foster home closer to the treatment center. With heavy hearts and tons of tears, we took him for the last time, and left him with foster parents. Several months later, the birthmom decided she wanted to leave the drug treatment program, in order to take a really good secretarial job. She was told she would lose all chances of getting custody of her baby boy. She left the program. We were then given custody, and later were able to adopt him. Just a couple of months later she quit the job, and was back to using drugs.

Update, June 25, 2000: Sandy, is now with us, and has been legally adopted by us!! Sandy is now 2 1/2 years old. She has her own Page, named...obviously... Sandy .

We love to use our homemade bar-b-que pit in our backyard. During the winter it is not used much, so "little critters" like spiders use it as their home. The kids were so excited to find a "whole bunch" of baby spiders, and just had to take a close look. These curious little ones are: Rita, 5; Roger, 4; and Sandy, 2 1/2.

Rita is full of energy and has a great sense of humor slapstick, sees humor where ever she is at. She won't go to sleep at night unless I sing her a song and pray with her. The other night, I was in my office, and rest of the house was dark. My older son was in the bathroom (oh yes, the lights were on in there, ha, ha). I heard strange sounds, and finally got up to see what was going on. There was little Rita, holding a dry diaper and knocking at the bathroom door... she had already taken off her pajamas and wet diaper. I guess she's ready to potty train herself.

Update: Yes, she did potty train herself, in about 4 days...dry even at night!! She goes to preschool 2 days a week, which will increase to 3 days a week in the Fall. She learned to float in the water, and loves to be in the pool every day that she is allowed. She loves to give me the prettiest drawings, and sings with me with the sweetiest voice. She dances, and runs, and climbs, and yells, and teases, and, and, and.
Rita is now 5 years old. She is a strong little thing, and can easily hang by her knees. This is part of our big backyard.

Roger is even more energetic. He seems to always have a bump on his forehead. I finally asked our doctor if we should get a helmet for him, but he said not to worry, the bumps weren't that bad. He started walking at 11 months of age, and has been running since a day after he learned to walk. He climbs every where, giggles a lot, and gives the sweetest hugs many times a day.

Update: June, 1999: Roger is now 3 1/2 years old, who no longer has a bump on his head, ha, ha. His balance is unbelieveable!! He is beginning to potty train himself, talks in complete sentences, usually, and loves to play ball, ride trikes, chase the dogs, feed the rabbits, and swing from a long rope tied to a tree (the rope is tied to the tree, not the child, ha, ha). He usually sleeps with a basketball, a truck or an airplane. He is always getting into things, and manages to find candy wherever it is hidden.

Boy, our kids sure like to be upside down, ha, ha. Roger is now 4 years old. He too is very, very strong and has the best sense of balance. He is hanging just by his ankles and feet!! Boy, was he proud of himself!! This is the first time I have seen him do it.
As I said, Rita is strong!! She was so proud as she yelled, "Mommy, Mommy, look at me...I can climb a tree." I was totally amazed. Then, the poor little thing slipped and "slid" about 6 inches, scratching her tummy. She hasn't tried to climb that tree since.
Rita, 2 and Roger, 1.
This is Roger, who is always smiling.
